A 17-year-old Virginia Beach boy has been identified as the victim in Saturday’s fatal crash on the Wright Memorial Bridge headed onto the Outer Banks.
Friends established a GoFundMe for the family of Conner McGrevy, who was traveling with his dad Saturday for vacation when their Jeep’s rear axle failed and a back tire came off, causing the crash, the Virginian Pilot reported.
The Jeep caught fire and Conner was trapped. His father, Shannon McGrevy, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to The Outer Banks Hospital.
Friends and family commenting on the GoFundMe page remembered Conner as sweet, kind and funny.
“Conner was an amazing young man!” one wrote. “His time with us was far too short, but it made a big impact on those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His boundless energy, infectious laugh, and easy-going spirit will be missed. We will cherish our time with him forever. Sending you love and strength in this time of loss.”
The fiery crash happened in the eastbound lanes around 2:50 p.m. just before the navigation span of the bridge that carries U.S. 158 from Point Harbor to Kitty Hawk.
“The McGrevy family is one of the most caring, fun loving families that anyone has ever met,” wrote friend and GoFundMe organizer Daniela Karanikas on behalf of Stability CrossFit in Virginia Beach, where Conner McGrevy’s mother Michelle is a coach. “We are asking for those who know the family, or those who can fathom what it is like to be in this situation to help them in this unimaginable time of need. All proceeds will go directly to the family to help with funeral and memorial expenses.”
The campaign had raised more than $19,000 on Monday afternoon.
