The Dare County Sheriff’s Office says the jury duty/arrest warrant scam has appeared again.
Those selected for jury duty may receive some mail, a phone call or even a visit by a deputy if you do not show up to court as instructed. But sheriff’s departments will not call and demand payment of a fine over the phone, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.
Scammers are cloning legitimate phone numbers, authorities say, making it easier to believe.
In another scam, a caller to a Manteo business posed as a Dominion Energy representative, and a phone tree the owner called sounded legitimate.
But again, the person on the other end of the line asked for payment using a type of prepaid card, which law enforcement says is a sure sign of a scammer.
