The fifth annual Dare to Scare 5K & Sweet Treat Fun Run event will be held on Roanoke Island on Saturday, October 23, 2021. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and the Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m.

The starting line for the 5K will be at the Coastal Studies Institute, which is located at 850 North Carolina Highway 345 in Wanchese. The finish line will be at the Dare County Center, which is located at 950 Marshall C. Collins Drive in Manteo. The Fun Run will take place at the Dare County Center.

All 5K participants are encouraged to park at the Dare County Center. Transportation from the Dare County Center to the starting line will be provided until 7:15 a.m. No return trips will be provided after the race.

This event will benefit the annual Dare County Center Toy Drive that takes place every December and benefits over 400 local youth in Dare County. The race is being held in collaboration with the Dare County Center, Coastal Studies Institute, OBX Go Far and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.

The Dare to Scare 5K is unique as it leads runners and walkers on a scenic trail through parts of Wanchese and Manteo. Participants are encouraged to dress in their Halloween best for a chance to win a prize. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and top three female race finishers. Pre-race activities will be held at the Coastal Studies Institute for runners and walkers to participate in prior to enjoying the course.

Registration is currently open and will continue through the day of the race, October 23, 2021. Volunteers and sponsors are also needed. For more information, visit www.obxgofar.org and  www.darenc.com/dccenter or call the Dare County Center at 252-475-9270.
