Yvonne Hancher Castleman Saffell of Manteo, NC, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on September 10, 2023, at the age of 90. Yvonne was born on May 21, 1933, in Martinsburg, WV, to her parents, Madeline Strother and John Castleman, and raised by her grandmother, Mary Ann Castleman whom she lovingly referred to as “Mama.”
Yvonne dedicated her working years to the Department of Defense, where she pursued a successful career in cost accounting. After retiring, she continued to find joy in giving back to her community, volunteering at Outer Banks Hotline. Yvonne’s compassionate and caring nature shone through in all aspects of her life.
Yvonne, a devoted National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) member, enjoyed establishing relationships and forming deep connections with like-minded individuals with shared interests and experiences. Notably, her affinity for sewing was a central part of who she was.
Yvonne is survived by her loving husband, Warren H. Saffell, and their children: Deborah Ann Saffell (Joseph), Andrea Lynn Saffell (Jerry), John W. Saffell (Debbie), and Richard S. Saffell along with a grandson she raised, David John Saffell (Nicole). She also leaves behind grandchildren: Joshua Allen Reed (Heather), Danielle Tavoi (Simon), Amber Lambert (Nathan), Michael Lotz, Tyler Warren Saffell (Cassie), Nicole Cooper (Jarrett), Amy Saffell, and Joey Thomas Saffell (Matty). She had the joy of being a great-grandmother to eighteen little ones.
In addition to her immediate family, Yvonne is remembered by her sister-in-law, Gail Gorman and children, and cherished cousins, Mary Ann and Bill Parkman and Janie and Bill Ingram as well as Warren’s cousin Shirley Shepard. Their love and support were always treasured, and their memories will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew Yvonne.
A funeral service to celebrate Yvonne’s life will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, NC with Father Nathan Finnin officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to a viewing and visitation on Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo, NC. A graveside committal service will take place at Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, VA, with Pastor Bill Ingram officiating.
Yvonne Hancher Castleman Saffell will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness, warmth, and generosity have left an indelible mark on the lives she touched. May she find eternal peace and rest in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
