John Herndon of Norfolk enjoyed some bottom fishing at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head Wednesday morning.

At age 101, he’s been fishing for “90-some years,” according to his great niece Michelle Nikki. The Montana native, Herndon served in the Navy during World War II and was assigned to a mine sweeper in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.

He took advantage of a section of the pier that has a lower handrail for seated visitors.
