VIDEO: Winter storm watch for some inland counties, Outer Banks still likely only getting rain

Another strong storm system is forecast to move through the region to end the work week, with the potential for severe icing across portions of eastern North Carolina. But wintry precipitation lovers on the Outer Banks will probably once again be very disappointed.

Forecasters at the Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service said Wednesday chances continue to increase for significant ice, sleet, and snow for areas away from the ocean.

The precipitation is expected to start late Thursday night, and peaking Friday into Friday night.

A winter storm watch has been issued for Tyrrell, Hyde, Washington and Beaufort counties and areas to the south and west.

The beaches are only going to see rain during the entire event, although we can’t rule out a mixture of precipitation before it all ends Saturday.

“The briefing does not forecast high winds or coastal flooding impacts at this time. Travel inland and to the north could be challenging from late tomorrow through the weekend,” Drew Pearson, Dare County Emergency Management Director.

There is a better chance for the white stuff across inland areas north of the Albemarle Sound and into southeastern Virginia, first as a cold front crosses the area on Thursday and then while low tracks just off the coast.
