William “Skipper” Halstead Bland, born on September 17, 1934 in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2024 at his home in South Mills, North Carolina. He was 89 years old.
William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Jean Bland; his parents, Hattie Mae Woods and Robert Woods; and his sister, Gladis Lloyd. He is survived by his daughters, Carol Allen and Chiquie Gregory; his son-in-law, Stephen Allen; his granddaughters, Jennifer Tank and Leah Jones and her son, Dillan Jones; as well as other cherished grandsons-in-law, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Bonnie Mason of Owensboro, Kentucky.
William worked diligently at Norshipco for 32 years, where he served as the foreman of both the sheet metal shop and the pipefitters shop. He was known for his strong work ethic and generosity. His leadership was marked by a strong sense of fairness, treating everyone with respect.
One of William’s greatest joys was decorating his lawn for Christmas. Each year, his home became a neighborhood spectacle, adorned with countless lights and a Santa with his reindeer taking off from the roof. He took great pride in bringing holiday cheer to his community through his elaborate displays, making the season bright for everyone who passed by.
William “Skipper” Bland will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his commitment to fairness and dedication, his generous spirit, and his joy in celebrating Christmas. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.
