The Town of Kill Devil Hills will have a temporary road closure beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, February 21, 2022, for West Third Street, from its intersection with US 158 to the Dare Centre entrance, for utility and roadway improvements by Fred Smith Company. The temporary road closure is scheduled to end by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2022.
This planned closure is necessary for the installation of a large drainage culvert, multiple small drainage cross lines, new water mains, new curb and gutter, and to accommodate a slight shift in the alignment of West Third Street as it approaches US 158.
Due to an anticipated increase in traffic volumes during this closure, all motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are urged to proceed with extra care and patience during their travels.
West Third Street Access: Access to West Third at the intersection with US 158 will be prohibited during this closure. Local traffic will access West Third Street from the west using West Fifth Street to Bay Drive, then Bay Drive to West Third Street. This will be the only marked detour route.
Dare Centre Access: All entrances to the Dare Centre are planned to remain open.
Circle K Convenience Store/Fueling Station Access, located at 1800 N. Croatan Hwy: Only the US 158 entrance will remain open during the closure.
Access to the houses at 106, 108 and 200 West Third Street, will remain open from the west only. (There will be limited road width.)
