Students, teachers, and board members of the Water’s Edge Village School in Corolla (WEVS) recently celebrated TowneBank of Currituck’s $50,000 pledge and donation with the bank’s Regional President, Taylor Sugg.

TowneBank’s support will help the charter school build an additional academic building adjacent to its current schoolhouse in the historic village. The schoolhouse will help WEVS, now in its 10th year, accommodate local residents’ academic needs by doubling its enrollment in the next five years.

The campaign’s goal is to raise $1.35M. Mr. Sugg said, “It is an honor for TowneBank to continue to support Water’s Edge Village School as the school expands with a new academic building. Since our founding 23 years ago, TowneBank has been committed to serving others and enriching lives by supporting hundreds of local charitable organizations through volunteerism, donations, scholarships, and grants.” TowneBank was also a Charter Donor at the school’s inception in 2012.

The non-profit organization Corolla Education Foundation aims to build on the TowneBank donation, raising the remaining $500,000 necessary to break ground in fall 2022. The new building would then be completed and accepting students for the 2023-2024 school year.

By state law, state and local governments may not contribute capital to charter schools so the school depends on local support to reach its goal.
