Several hundred Walgreens in North Carolina and select CVS locations in Hampton Roads and other parts of Virginia will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines next week as part of a federal program.

The companies were selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide a limited number of COVID-19 vaccinations.

The vaccinations will be available at 300 Walgreens locations across North Carolina starting Feb. 12.

A total of 28 CVS stores in Chesapeake, Fredericksburg, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Stafford and Virginia Beach will have the shots beginning Feb. 11.

Both Walgreens and CVS said they will follow the priority groups in place for each state, specific locations that will have the shots will be announced when final distribution plans are set, and that appointments will be required.

“Walgreens was one of the first pharmacies to begin administering COVID-19 vaccinations in December to long-term care facility staff and residents, and we look forward to leveraging our experience to support the federal government and CDC in expanding access to these vaccines,” said John Standley, president of Walgreens.

“Our pharmacy teams have already provided nearly two million COVID-19 vaccinations and stand ready with their expertise to help educate and vaccinate additional Americans, including those in rural and underserved communities,” Standley said.

“One of our greatest strengths as a company is our presence in communities across the country, which makes us an ideal partner for administering vaccines in a safe, convenient and familiar manner,” said Karen S. Lynch, President and Chief Executive Officer, CVS Health.

“We continue to be grateful for the commitment of our frontline colleagues whose dedication has allowed us to deliver care and peace of mind throughout the pandemic,” Lynch said.
