Video: Stephen Colbert throws love to OBX, shade to our barbecue

Last week on The Late Show on CBS, host Stephen Colbert and actor Zach Galifianakis got into it over the differences between their home states.

Galifianakis is from Wilkesboro, N.C. in the foothills just west of Winston-Salem, while Colbert is a native of Charleston, S.C.

Colbert did give a shoutout to the Outer Banks during the segment, but then he had to go and throw all kinds of shade at our barbecue.

Gov. Roy Cooper weighed in Monday on Twitter to Colbert’s remarks.

We shall refrain from fanning the hickory coals of which is truly the best style of barbecue, but it does come from right here in The Old North State.

There’s the eastern N.C.-style using the whole hog with a sauce of just vinegar and crushed red pepper, or Lexington-style which is just the shoulders and a ketchup/vinegar/spices mixture.

That is another fight for another time, but there is one thing we all agree in on North Carolina. The word “barbecue” is a noun, not a verb.

When you cook hamburgers and hot dogs over charcoal, that’s not barbecue, that’s just grilling or a cookout.

AND I WILL FIGHT YOU OVER IT!
