Demolition is underway on the Herbert C. Bonner over Oregon Inlet. Bridge worker Jamison Padgett captured video of the first sections of the 56-year-old bridge being removed this week.
The new Marc Basnight Bridge opened to traffic Feb. 25 and will be dedicated with a ceremony at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2. The Bonner Bridge, built in 1963, will be dismantled over the next several months, with the project scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
A 1,000-foot section of the south end of the old bridge will remain in place as a pedestrian walkway and should be open to foot traffic next year.
