UPDATED: Power restored after transformer, damaged line repaired in Kitty Hawk

Update, 2:10 p.m.: Power has been restored following an outage that lasted more than three hours on Thursday. Work was still ongoing to replace a damaged transformer near Eckner Street.

Previous story: Just over 2,600 customers of Dominion Power in Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores lost power Thursday morning due to a damaged power line.

According to Dominion, the outage was down to 1,562 customers at 11 a.m. Crews were working in the area of the U.S. 158 and Eckner Street intersection. They expect to have the lights back on by 3 p.m.

Just before 12 p.m., the number of customers impacted had dropped to 1,116. What caused the damage has not been reported, although an eyewitness said it appear
ed a transformer exploded and also damaged the lines.

The outside, northbound lane of the Bypass and Eckner Street between the Beach Road and U.S. 158 are closed to traffic where the repairs were taking place.

And with the extended nature of the outage, it’s had an impact on businesses in the area.
