UPDATE, Thursday, 3 p.m.: The N.C. Department of Transportation says N.C. 12 between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe has reopened to traffic, but there are still several spots with sand on the roadway at Pea Island and Mirlo, and standing water in other locations.
Crews resumed cleanup at first light and had the road reopened around 1 p.m.
The highway department has been working to remove sand and ocean overwash from N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island as a nor’easter blew through on Wednesday.
N.C. 12 was closed from the Basnight Bridge at Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe early in the morning due to blowing and drifting sand.
High tide was around 2:30 p.m. today, and the ocean overwash started well before that. Overwash has also been reported in the Kinnakeet Shores area of Avon and at the motels in Buxton.
There were also reports from Hatteras village of water covering Eagle Pass. Other parts of the village also experiencing minor soundside flooding.
