UPDATED, Oct. 18: Kill Devil Hills police have released the identity of a 36-year-old man lying down on the Beach Road that died after he was struck by a vehicle on Oct. 10.

Matthew J. Adams suffered head and leg injuries, was transported to The Outer Banks Hospital, where he passed away.

The collision happened at approximately 8:32 p.m. at the intersection of North Virginia Dare Trail and First Street, according to a news release.

Investigators found that one car traveling northbound on N.C. 12 swerved after the driver spotted something in the road six feet north of a crosswalk, but a second vehicle following behind could not avoid striking Adams.

Police said there is overhead street lighting in the area of the intersection, both vehicles were traveling the posted speed of 35 mph, and there was a light mist falling at the time of the collision that may have obscured the drivers’ vision.

Impairment was not a factor for either driver, who were both tested at the scene.

The Kill Devil Hills Police Department added Monday they have been unable to determine why Adams was lying in the roadway, and request anyone who might have been a witness or who has relevant information to contact Det. Mike Sudduth at (252) 449-5350.
