A pair of swimmers drowned Sunday morning in the Croatan Sound at the Old Swimming Hole off Roanoke Island.

Dare County Sheriff’s Office Major Jeff Derringer said a caller to 911 at 11:02 a.m. reported two people were under the water off the beach adjacent to the Dare County Regional Airport.

Divers with the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department eventually found a 13-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man and brought them to shore.

Despite the efforts of Dare County EMS, the two could not be revived and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members identified the victims Zaqueo and Hernan Romero, both from Guatemala. The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help get the victims back to Guatemala for funeral services.
