Updated: More overwash means N.C. 12 still closed on Pea Island, Ocracoke until Thursday

More overwash has undone all the work the N.C. Department of Transportation did in an attempt to clear N.C. 12 of sand between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe and on Ocracoke Island, and the road will remain closed until Thursday.

“Today’s tides slowed our progress, but we will be working through the night to get everyone where they’re going tomorrow,” the highway department said.

4:30 p.m. update: While we'd hoped to be able to open NC12 today, the ocean had other plans. The road will remain closed…

Hatteras and Ocracoke islands have experienced several days of coastal flooding during high tides thanks to several weather systems causing strong winds and churning seas and large surf.

Trash pick up for Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras that was to take place Friday will now be on Monday. The next collection in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon pick-up is still scheduled for Friday.
