Multiple agencies resumed the search Tuesday morning for a swimmer who went missing Monday in the Currituck Sound north of the Wright Memorial Bridge.
Currituck County Emergency Communications received a 911 call at 12:30 p.m. about a man that had jumped off of a rented pontoon boat to swim, according to N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Law Enforcement Sgt. John Beardsley.
“He began to struggle in the water and his friends threw him a life jacket. Unable to reach the life jacket, he then fell below the water’s surface,” Beardsley said.
N.C. Wildlife Law Enforcement officers were first on the scene and initiated a search, and were joined by deputies from the Currituck county Sheriffs Office and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Dare Medflight has also been taking part in the search according to eyewitnesses, that has been concentrated in the Currituck Sound between Duck and the north end of Martins Point.
Beardsley said the man has been identified as being from India who works and resides in New Jersey.
The Coast Guard called off the search last night, but the Currituck County Sheriffs Office, N.C. Marine Patrol, and N.C. Wildlife resumed the search at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
“We are bringing one of our planes up to assist in the search as the Coast Guard has called of their search for the man,” Beardsley said.
