Despite efforts to clear N.C. 12 ahead of high tide around noon today, overwash has covered the road in multiple spots again on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.

The N.C. Department of Transportation says it will now be at least Wednesday afternoon before they will be able to reopen the road to traffic.

Four-to-six feet of sand has covered N.C. 12 in multiple spots at times since Sunday.

A coastal flood advisory and high surf advisory remains in effect for the Outer Banks, as waves from distant Hurricane Teddy combined with onshore winds over the past several days and higher astronomical tides have lead to repeated overwash periods at high tide.

Ocean overwash was impacting N.C. 12 and adjacent roadways up to two hours before Tuesday’s high tide, according to The Island Free Press.

Travelers are advised to use caution and to avoid driving in these areas if possible, as saltwater can heavily damage vehicles.

Dare County announced trash collection for the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon will now take place on Friday, Sept. 25. Thursday’s collection for Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village remains unchanged.
