Watch out for fake $50s floating around the Outer Banks

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is warning everyone to watch out for counterfeit $50 bills that have been recently reported by merchants along the Outer Banks.

Three different business in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk reported having taken the funny money in the last few days.

“These bills look to be on very good quality paper but appear to have been washed and all with the same serial number,” according to a post on the DCSO Facebook page.

The phony $50s are likely real $1 bills, and that pens used to detect fakes will give the same indication of valid U.S. currency.

If you suspect you have a counterfeit bill, contact your town’s law enforcement agency or the Sheriff’s Office.
