Cape Hatteras National Seashore reopened walking access Tuesday morning to one of the most popular surf fishing spots in the world using a shoreline corridor, and has added an extra 1/10th of a mile access for off-road vehicles.
“From the current ORV boundary, it is only a short 800 foot walk to the tip of Cape Point,” said Mike Barber, public information officer for the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
Barber said that as long as no shorebird nesting activity is observed in the area, additional ORV access to the very tip of Cape Hatteras will be provided starting Monday, July 20.
“Last year, Cape Point was closed to both pedestrians and ORVs until August 5,” Barber said. “This year’s pedestrian closure lasted 45 days and the ORV closure is expected to last for 58 days.”
“Interestingly, without the project to extend the Bypass Road a couple years ago, the closures would have lasted an extra 47 days,” Barber said.
