A section of an empty oceanfront lot caught on fire Tuesday afternoon, but was quickly contained by Kill Devil Hills firefighters before it could spread through the dunes to nearby homes.

The fire was spotted around 1 p.m. in the 3100 block of North Virginia Dare Trail near milepost 5.5.

Several people tried to slow the fire from spreading with buckets of water until firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.

“A fuse on a power pole blew and a piece of hot metal set the grass on fire,” said Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal John Risoldi.

He added that there was no damage other than burning the grass.

“With the dry conditions we need to be on alert for more incidences until we get rain,” Risoldi said.

Dominion Power crews were on the scene afterwards to make repairs.
