Updated: Firefighters battle 101° heat index to put out blaze in Duck

Firefighters battled a fire at a residential structure in the 100 block of Bayberry Drive Saturday afternoon in Duck.

Crews were called to the scene of the blaze at 4:57 p.m. in the Bayberry Bluffs neighborhood north of Duck village.

While firefighters were having to deal with a heat index of 101 degrees, wind speeds were reported to be only around 10 mph out of the west at the time of the fire.

The occupants, including the homeowners, are safe and were not in the home when the fire began, according to a Town of Duck press release.

One support personnel and one firefighter were treated for heat-related illness by Dare County EMS with one person being transported to The Outer Banks Hospital.

The fire was contained to the home and no other structures were involved. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department, Kitty Hawk Fire Department, Corolla Fire and Rescue, Colington Fire Department and Dare County EMS provided assistance on scene.
