After being placed on administrative leave following his arrest last week for allegedly assaulting a woman who also works at Town Hall, Duck Town Manager Chris Layton resigned on Friday.

The 50-year-old Southern Shores resident was taken into custody at his office on July 15 on a pair of misdemeanor counts of assault of a female.

Layton was booked and then released from the Dare County Detention Center after posting $5,000 bond, and has an appearance in court scheduled for August 21.

He had served as Duck’s town manager since its founding in 2002. Terms of Layton’s departure were not released following a special closed session meeting by the Duck Town Council on Friday.

The town’s Director of Community Development, Joe Heard, was named interim Town Manager and Finance Officer.
