UPDATED: N.C. 12 has reopened at First Street in Kill Devil Hills after being shut down since Tuesday afternoon due to a natural gas leak.

Piedmont Natural Gas crews have repaired the lines in the area of Tanya Drive to First Street, and plan to bury a deeper line in the future, though no time frame has been set, the town said in a news alert. When that work is completed, it is not expected to require a road closure; flag crews will be utilized.

EARLIER STORY: The gas main running along N.C. 12 in Kill Devil Hills was damaged by a construction crew, shutting down the Beach Road around mile post 7.5 Tuesday afternoon.

Towler said the incident happened at the corner of Landing Drive and North Virginia Dare Trail.

N.C. 12 remains closed between Tanya and First streets, as Piedmont Natural Gas crews continued to work to make repairs into the evening. No evacuations were ordered.
