A pair of North Carolina legislators who went on a duck hunting trip with other lawmakers last week in Hyde County have tested positive for COVID-10.

Republican state Sen. Chuck Rabon of Brunswick County and state Rep. Brian Turner, a Democrat from Asheville, have confirmed they experienced mild symptoms.

Also on the trip was state Rep. Bobby Hanig of Powells Point, at least three other legislators and first-term Congressman Madison Cawthorn of Hendersonville.

Hanig confirmed to OBX Today he was among those hunting during the annual excursion that brings lawmakers from across the state to Hyde County.

“I didn’t know (Turner) tested positive, but he was wearing a mask the whole time. … I don’t know anyone more diligent about wearing a mask than Brian Turner,” Hanig told WRAL-TV Tuesday morning.

Turner missed the opening day of the General Assembly last Wednesday, while others that participated in the hunt were in Raleigh.

Rep. Cawthorn represents the 11th District in Washington, and was among those who voted against the second impeachment of President Donald Trump last week.

He has garnered national attention for his remarks before and after the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters.

According to a news release from N.C. Senate leadership, Rabon took a COVID test Monday after he began experiencing mild cold-like symptoms.

“This morning he received a positive result. He has no symptoms today. He is isolating at his home and calling those with whom he had close contact”

Other Republicans on the trip included Sen. Jim Perry of Kinston, Rep. John Bell of Goldsboro and Rep. Jason Saine from Lincolnton, the News and Observer reported.

Cawthorn, Bell and Perry have all been tested for the virus, according to the newspaper. Perry tested negative and Bell is awaiting results.

Cawthorn’s spokesman, Micah Bock, said the congressman does not show signs of having the virus but was tested Tuesday and is awaiting results.
