Two First Flight High School students face long-term suspension after school officials identified them as responsible for racist graffiti in the boys locker room last week.

The graffiti included two uses of a racial epithet, along with reference to a conspiracy theory about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Video of the vandalism began circulating on social media last Tuesday, March 26.

The incident prompted investigation by school leaders and resource officers from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office.

Both students have been suspended and the school principal has recommended a long-term suspension, Dare County schools spokesman Keith Parker said.

“This is in direct violation of the core values of Dare County Schools, and we denounce this kind of behavior under all circumstances,” said superintendent John Farrelly in a statement last week. “Any student, or students, that are found responsible for this incident will be disciplined to the fullest extent in accordance with the Dare County Schools Code of Student Conduct.”
