Town of Manteo to shift curbside recycling to subscription-based service Jan. 1

The Town of Manteo is the latest Outer Banks municipality to move away from providing curbside recycling services due to rising costs and the drastic reduction in purchasing of the materials domestically and overseas.

Nags Head eliminated its curbside recycling service earlier this year, and has been encouraging residents to sign-up with Bay Disposal. A private company that serviced Hatteras Island went out-of-business in the fall of 2019.

Beginning in January, recycling in Manteo will return to a subscription-based service with Bay Disposal.

Weekly roll cart recycling service will cost $11.35 per month, and Bay Disposal will send out bills each quarter.

The new service starts on January 1, and Manteo residents or businesses must opt in to the service by calling Katie Beasley at Bay Disposal at 252-491-5105 (Ext. 351) by January 31.

Roll carts will be removed by Bay Disposal for those customers who decide not to opt in to the service.

In order to help with the transition back to the subscription-based service, the Town of Manteo will provide temporary recycling containers in the side parking lot at Town Hall from January through the end of June.

As an alternative, residents are welcome to use the Dare County Recycling Center located at 1018 Driftwood Drive, and their schedule can be seen on darenc.com.

If you have any questions, please contact James Ayers at 252-473-2133. The Town of Manteo appreciates your consideration and patience during this transition.
