Deep tropical moisture from distant Hurricane Eta is forecast to interact with a slow moving cold front late tonight and tomorrow, resulting in widespread showers and a few thunderstorms over eastern North Carolina.

The Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service said Wednesday morning heavy downpours are possible and could lead to localized flash flooding.

The most likely period for flooding is Thursday, but heavier rainfall will begin late tonight, according to a weather office.

Two to four inches of rain is forecast for most areas, but as much as four to six inches is possible from the Dare County mainland south.

Wednesday morning, Eta was in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico when it was upgraded back to a hurricane. The system is forecast to eventually move across the Florida Peninsula and into the Atlantic this weekend.

National Weather Service forecast for Nags Head as of Wednesday 7 a.m.
