U.S. Fish and Wildlife is conducting a prescribed burn today on about 45 acres at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The agency said its plan was to use the wind to keep smoke away from N.C. 12 and the power lines.

A prescribed burn (or controlled burn) is an intentional burning of vegetation the agency employs to restore and maintain wildlife habitat on most of the 2 million acres of state game lands used by hunters, anglers and wildlife watchers
