Quiet weather ahead for the Outer Banks; near-to-below normal temps rest of month

National Weather Service forecasters are expecting temperatures across much of the eastern United States to be at or below normal for the rest of January, with the final week of the month cooler than usual.

Overall, the weather along the Outer Banks should be pretty quiet this week with the next chance for rain on Thursday and Friday.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, there is a greater than 50 percent chance that much of the East Coast, including North Carolina, will see temperatures running below normal for the week of Jan. 24-30.

High pressure will continue over the region before a dry cold front move through early Wednesday morning, said forecasters at the Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service.

Some forecast models indicate the front may stall south of the region and allow for moisture to build into the area. That could allow for some showers for Thursday and Friday, before another cool and dry weekend.

Small craft advisory conditions on the coastal waters will continue through Monday with gusts to 30 knots and seas up to 6 feet on the open waters and 2 to 3 foot waves on the sounds.

These conditions should subside Tuesday through Thursday, with mostly west/northwest winds of 15-to-20 knots and seas 3-to-5 feet on the ocean, and 2 to 3 foot waves on the sounds.
