The power of a lightning strike was on full display late Monday afternoon on Hatteras Island, when a house in Salvo was hit by a bolt.
The Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department was called to Tarheel Court at 4:10 p.m. The north peak of the home suffered significant damage, but there was no fire and no one was hurt.
According to the National Weather Service, lightning can reach temperatures that are hotter than the surface of the sun.
North Carolina ranks third in the United States, trailing just Texas and Florida, for the number of lightning-related deaths since 1959.
