The Kill Devil Hills Police Department is quashing rumors of town restaurants violating the state’s stay-home and closure orders after untrue stories about Sandbars Raw Bar and Grill and N.Y. Bagels made the rounds.
It started when officers were called to Sandbars at 1716 N. Croatan Highway on Monday at 7:38 p.m. regarding a disturbance.
“An intoxicated female had assaulted a person at the restaurant over a previous dispute. During the course of the investigation the suspect’s vehicle was searched. The suspect was a 38-year-old resident of Kitty Hawk,” town police said in a news release.
“An uninvolved party reported to a media source that Kill Devil Hills police officers were engaged in shutting down Sandbars and had arrested employees for violating the governor’s stay-at-home order. This is categorically not the case, but it does illustrate the perils uninformed opinion may have on the reputation of others.”
Sandbars is open with a limited menu and curbside service. They are not in violation of the emergency orders as they relate to Covid-19, police said.
Also, in an unrelated matter, a complaint about N.Y. Bagels at 1708 N. Croatan Highway was relayed to police, advising the restaurant was also violating the stay-at-home order.
“Officers investigating the situation determined there was no violation and service was being provided in accordance with the emergency order,” the release said.
“Both N.Y. Bagels and Sandbars maintain a social media presence on Facebook. We would encourage anyone curious about their operations to visit these public pages for more information. The Department appreciates the effort of the public to keep everyone safe during this crisis,” police said.
Town police ask anyone who believes coronavirus-related orders are being violated to first contact Dare County Emergency Management who will route them to the appropriate agency for follow-up.
“Making a public accusation can be unnecessarily damaging to both a business and the person making an unfounded accusation,” the release said.
