A Facebook post about a strange encounter and possible attempted child abduction at the Walmart in Kitty Hawk made the rounds on Outer Banks local groups this week, but police say they can find no evidence of it happening.

A local resident posted that she went to the Kitty Hawk Walmart on Monday around 3 p.m. and that she “noticed a very strange man walking around the parking lot with his mask on acting very peculiar.”

She said the man came up to her car and looked in at her children. She said she then saw “this man try to grab a child we did not know.”

The post included a photo of man in a mask in a parking lot. It appears the woman’s post has since been removed, or set to private.

Kitty Hawk police said they weren’t notified of the incident until more than seven hours later. In a Facebook post, police said they reviewed Walmart surveillance video and spoke with the individuals who said they saw suspicious activity.

“We want to assure the community that we have received no calls reporting any attempted abduction related to this incident,” police said.
