N.C. 12 will remain closed overnight from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe overnight Sunday due to ongoing dangerous conditions, NCDOT reported Sunday afternoon

Transportation crews are facing hazardous conditions trying to clear sand from the road, and weather conditions are not expected to improve overnight, NCDOT said.

“Limited visibility, severe ocean over wash, and continued blown sand on the roadway have contributed to the unsafe conditions NCDOT crews are experiencing,” the agency said. “Ocean over wash is expected to affect NC12 again Sunday night and possibly Monday with tides and wind forecast to relax by sometime midday Monday.”

NCDOT clearing efforts will resume at such time the weather conditions improve to allow for safe operations.

NCDOT says it appears there’s no structural damage to the Hatteras Island’s only thoroughfare, but blown sand and ocean overwash are severe.
