Photo: Rare bird on the Outer Banks ahead of World Migratory Bird Day

Story courtesy Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

The Painted Redstart (Myioborus pictus) is not a migrating bird, normally only found in Mexico and Arizona. But certainly the Outer Banks is a long way from home.

Seen recently at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, this is an extremely rare bird, and may even be a first for all of North Carolina.

This Saturday, October 10, is World Migratory Bird Day. The day is meant to focus on our avian friends who often fly hundreds of miles a year, to eat, breed and survive.
