Organizers have announced this year’s TowneBank Outer Banks Marathon will now be a virtual race, but they are hopeful the Southern Fried Half Marathon and a 5K run can still take place Veterans Day weekend along the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks Sporting Events posted on their Facebook page the event scheduled for November 8 “will not be possible this year due to COVID restraints.”

Jenny Ash, director of Outer Banks Sporting Events, told OBX Today on Monday they are working to finalize details about how to conduct a half marathon and 5-kilometer race the weekend of November 6-8.

Options being considered include using a course with a central start-and-finish area and ample room for social distancing and parking.

The normal half marathon route follows the southern portion of the marathon course from Nags Head to Roanoke Island.

Ash was hopeful that an announcement with full details could be made in the next few days.

Other events that are normally held on marathon weekend include a one-mile kids fun run and 8-kilometer race that start-and-finish at First Flight High School, a pre-race expo in Kill Devil Hills and post-marathon party in downtown Manteo.

OBSE’s Outer Banks Triathalon shifted to an all virtual event that concluded on Wednesday.
