Outer Banks Forever, the non-profit organization supporting the area’s national park sites, has launched a new program where anyone can virtually adopt a sea turtle nest at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Adopters will receive an official adoption certificate and information about your specific nest when it hatches this summer.

Here’s how it works:

Give! Donate online here to symbolically adopt your nest. (You may also mail your donation to P.O. Box 1635, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 with Adopt A Nest in the memo)

Get your nest! Within 5 days of your gift Outer Banks Forever will assign you to a real sea turtle nest that is being tracked by your park staff. Once assigned, you will receive your adoption certificate by mail and email with initial information about your nest.

Wait to hatch! When your nest hatches this summer, Outer Banks Forever will send you an update with information the park collects about your nest including turtle species, number of eggs, number of hatchlings, and more.

“Your donation today will help us fund important programs that protect and enhance Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the vital habitat it preserves. Learn more about our current projects here,” director Jessica Green said.

There are a limited number of nests available, and some are hatching already so get yours soon.

Because of current social distancing guidelines, your park staff are not able to hold the public sea turtle nest excavations you love to see each symmer. Outer Banks Forever is working with them to bring you a virtual sea turtle nest excavation in the next two weeks.
