Jesse Edelmayer of Mooresville caught and released this bonefish, a rare catch in these waters, while bottom fishing with shrimp in the surf zone at Jennette’s Pier Tuesday morning.
Bonefish have an elongated, torpedo-shaped body with silvery scales.
The rostrum, or snout, is rather pointed in appearance. The top, or dorsal, fin has a triangular shape similar to that of a shark, according to online resource Animals Network.
Adults typically measure about one and a half foot long, but larger individuals reach lengths of three feet long plus. Most weigh around 6 pounds on average.
