Authorities say working smoke alarms helped prevent a tragedy after an early morning house fire Wednesday in Duck.

The Duck Fire Department and Duck Police Department were called to a reported structure fire located in the 100 block of Poteskeet Drive at 3:08 a.m.

The blaze was contained to the exterior of the home and no other structures were involved.

The occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors in the home and escaped unharmed. The cause remains under investigation.

“Thank you to our mutual aid agencies Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department, Corolla Fire and Rescue and Dare County EMS for assistance on scene,” said town spokesperson Christian Legner. “A great reminder to test our smoke alarms!”
