New water tower over Kill Devil Hills almost ready for its big fill-up

After first looking like a bong, then wearing a cape, the brand new Town of Kill Devil Hills 400,000 gallon water tank adjacent to the fire station is expected to be ready for its big fill-up by the end of the month.

Tank electrical work was scheduled to start this week, followed by cathodic protection and mixer installation, according to an update from the town posted on May 29.

That will be followed by disinfection, testing, state approval, then tie-in piping will follow. After that, the 180-foot tall pedisphere will be put in to service.

A new cell tower adjacent to the tanks is also nearing completion.

After the communication equipment is removed and the water drained later this summer, the 200,000 gallon tank that has stood for the last 55 years within sight of Wright Brothers National Memorial will be taken apart.
