The North Carolina Democratic Party is demanding an apology from Third District Congressman Greg Murphy for a since-deleted Twitter post they called “racist” about Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
A Republican from Greenville who is in his first term representing the Outer Banks and a large portion of eastern North Carolina, Murphy posted on his Twitter account during Wednesday’s debate between Harris and Vice President Mike Pence.
Murphy called Harris “a walking disaster” only picked for her color and race.
Harris, who is black and Asian-American, is the first woman of color on a major Presidential ticket.
Murphy told WITN-TV on Thursday he deleted the post because “it was supposed to say color and gender.”
“I’m not into gender politics,” Murphy added before saying he was not available for an interview, WITN reported.
Wayne Goodwin, chairman of the N.C. Democratic Party, issued a statement Thursday afternoon:
“There is no place for racism in North Carolina, and based on the pure racism in this tweet, there is no place for Greg Murphy in elected office. His sentiments aren’t just offensive, they diminish the accomplishments of women of color in North Carolina and across our country. This year, in particular, racism has played a starring role in the Republican Party’s platform and discourse. We call on the NCGOP and the Trump campaign to denounce this statement and we call on Greg Murphy to immediately apologize for his repugnant comments.”
