Thousands are without power on the Outer Banks and across eastern North Carolina after Tropical Storm Isaias blew through.
Isaias made landfall as a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph winds near Ocean Isle Beach last night, spawning tornadoes and warnings up the coast and into eastern Virginia. Bertie County officials reported a tornado with possible fatalities and serious damage along Morning Road south of Windsor this morning.
Isaias this morning was once again a tropical storm, with sustained winds of 70 mph. The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City forecast office reported peak wind gusts this morning of 75 mph at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, 72 mph in Avon and 68 mph in Manteo.
As of 8 a.m., worries of soundside storm surge flooding were diminishing.
Dominion Energy was reporting 40,644 outages across eastern North Carolina this morning, with 6.302 of those in Currituck and 3,156 in Dare County, mainly on north Roanoke Island.
