It’s the time of year when some of the Currituck Outer Banks’ wild horses swim, or walk when the water’s low, around the end of the fence in the sound to graze in neighborhoods near the Currituck Banks Reserve. The grass really is greener there.
“This behavior isn’t problematically habitual, and is just something that we easily manage for a month or two at the end of every winter,” the Corolla Wild Horse Fund said in a Facebook post. “That bright green grass on the landscaped yards is just too much of a draw for them!”
The fund asks that if you see a horse or two around your house in the morning, call Currituck County dispatch at 252-232-2216 so that they can call the herd manager Meg Puckett.
“Our wonderful county dispatchers can get in touch with us quickly, and send a deputy over if the horses need to be monitored until we arrive on scene,” the fund said.
As always, please do not approach the horses or try to move them.
“Our staff and volunteers have it down to a science, and interference could push the horses into a more dangerous area and make it difficult for us to move them back to the 4×4,” the fund said.
The fund also gave a shout out to volunteers for their help keeping the herd safe.
