Biological technicians at Cape Hatteras National Seashore discovered a freshly dug green sea turtle nest on Halloween morning, the latest nest laid on the seashore in more than two decades.

The nest was found almost a mile west of South Beach Road on Hatteras Island. It will reach its hatch window of 50-55 days between December 20 and 25. Sea turtle nesting season usually runs from late spring through early summer, with nests hatching late in the summer into early fall.

According to data on seaturtle.org, this nest is the latest laid sea turtle nest at the seashore since at least 1997.
