Family of three escape uninjured from house fire in lower Currituck County

A family of three, including a child, escaped without injury from a fire inside their lower Currituck County home Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 8300 block of Caratoke Highway at 9:52 a.m. where they found smoke pouring from the single-wide trailer on the westbound side of U.S. 158.

Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department Chief Vernon Hart said crews were able to execute a quick knockdown, but there was heavy damage caused by heat and smoke.

Hart said the fire originated in the area of a clothes dryer, but the exact cause was still being investigated. No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross was on scene offering assistance to the family.

Also responding to the fire were personnel from the Southern Shores and Crawford volunteer fire departments, Currituck EMS and Currituck County Sherrif’s Office.
