A fall foal has been spotted among the wild horses at Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Crystal Wasley recently captured a photo of mare and foal for the National Park Service with a zoom lens.
Cape Lookout’s wild horses live on Shackleford Banks, the southernmost barrier island on the national seashore, in a herd of about 100 horses. They’re believed to come from similar genetic stock as the colonial Spanish mustangs of the northern Outer Banks beaches.
The new addition is the 12th foal born this year at Cape Lookout, the Foundation for Shackleford Horses said in a Facebook post.
