An explosion Sunday evening at a substation in Nags Head knocked out power to thousands of customers from the Jockey’s Ridge area south, including much of Roanoke Island and the Dare mainland.
The explosion happened at 7:16 p.m. at the substation located on West Lakeside Drive in the Whalebone Junction section of Nags Head.
A Dominion Power spokesperson said they experienced “an equipment failure”.
Dominion was originally reporting just over 8,000 customers without power, but had that number down to about 4,100 by 10:40 p.m.
That number had dropped to almost 3,700 by 1 a.m., with the outage still stretching from West Wood Hill Drive at mile post 11 to the end of South Old Oregon Inlet Road at mile post 21. Power to all customers was restored just after 5 a.m.
Tideland EMC reported power to all customers on the Manns Harbor circuit, including East Lake and Stumpy Point, was restored at 9:24 p.m.
The Dominion spokesperson said Monday afternoon they were still trying to determine the cause of the equipment failure.
