A number of Currituck County Water Department customers on the mainland have been experiencing discoloration since Saturday, but the county says it is safe to drink.
Water department personnel performed regular maintenance on a raw water tank at the mainland water plant in Maple on Friday, according to county public information office Randall Edwards.
“As a result of this maintenance, the water has a temporary light brown color. However, the water has been treated and is safe for use,” Edwards said.
Reports of the “tea-colored water” had been concentrated between Barco and Tull’s Bay in Moyock on Saturday, but customers through out the county were reporting similar issues of varying intensity on Sunday.
Extensive flushing throughout the system is being conducted and will continue to flush until the system is clear of discoloration, and testing is also taking place to ensure the water is safe.
“With the flushing, the water should clear up soon. We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused,” Edwards said.
