The first foal of the year has been spotted among the wild horses at Cape Lookout National Seashore, and it’s a boy!
Crystal Wasley captured a photo of mare and foal for the National Park Service on Thursday, with a zoom lens.
Cape Lookout’s wild horses live on Shackleford Banks, the southernmost barrier island on the national seashore, in a herd of about 100 horses. They’re believed to come from similar genetic stock as the colonial Spanish mustangs of the northern Outer Banks beaches.
Earlier this month, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, which manages the wild horses of the Currituck Outer Banks, discovered the first foal of the year to that herd, as well.
